Jack’s Beach Party, aka Picnic on the Beach, is taking place on Sunday 2 August on Ainsdale beach near Pontins. It starts from 12.30pm onwards and is open to Birkdale/Mary Hare ex-pupils, family, friends and controlled pets, but no goldfish though! Entrance is by Shore Road where car parking is normally about £5.

If you’re coming along to this event, please bring own picnic, drink, deckchairs and windbreaks and/or beach blankets.

public_inquiryThe Champion newspaper reports there is to be a Public Inquiry on 18 August over developer plans to add homes on to the school site. Sefton Council previously refused the plans saying they do not include “affordable housing”. Local residents are encouraged to attend the public meeting if they are concerned with what may happen to the conservation area surrounding the school.

Update 20/6: local resident Mike Nash has signed our Guestbook requesting support at the Public Inquiry to oppose the plans put forward by Centremodel.

We are sad to inform you all that Mr Jack Henderson passed away peacefully last night (28 February). Details of his funeral will be announced when arrangements have been made.

Update 03.03.15: [1] Mr Henderson’s funeral will be held on Friday 13 March at Lord St West Church in Southport at 1.15pm. This will be followed by a private committal. Family flowers only, but donations can be made to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. After the funeral, the family invites mourners to the Masonic Hall on Duke Street (opposite the church) to celebrate Jack’s life.

Former Honorary Treasurer and Chairman of the Board of Governors Mr A.C. Whyte sadly passed away on 9 January at the age of 99. His funeral will be held at Southport Crematorium on Thursday 5 February at 11.20am.

Mrs Wood has been in touch to say Mabel Flaherty, who was a cleaner for many years at the school, died peacefully in her sleep last week. Her funeral is at Duke Street Cemetery at 2pm tomorrow, Thursday 12 June. It would be lovely if any former pupils who remember her and are free could attend.

The Reunion Committee met on Friday night, 16 May. A decision was taken at that meeting to set the closing date for ticket orders and that is Saturday 13 September. No tickets will be sold on the night of the Reunion in October, and entry to the event will be by ticket only. Please be sure to get your ticket orders in quickly before they sell out!

News sent in today reveals our school is to feature on See Hear tomorrow (7 May) at 10.30am on BBC2. If you miss it, programme is repeated on Thursday at 12.25am on same channel. See Hear looks at a Horizon episode made 40 years ago which explored teaching methods at the time.

The BBQ planned for 29 June is now a ‘Picnic on the Beach’. This is because Sefton Council have placed a ban on BBQs for environmental reasons. The picnic will start from 12.30pm on Ainsdale Beach as before. Please come along and meet up with friends; bring a ball for a kick-about!
