smile Hello I was looking at the 1988 list and my name was not there. Instead my brother's name - Jonathan Morriss was there and he left in 1982.

So my question is what happened to my name?

Tony Sunday, 25 March 2007 17:57
I think Mr Henderson made a mistake there - the strip will say J. Morriss as they all give the person's initials so he must have thought it was Jonathan. I've corrected it.

If you want your results strip, it could be sent to Jonathan or email me an address it can be sent to.

You can tell Mr Henderson he needs to get rid of that coal fire and get gas instead! big grin wink

May I take it that the list is complete now? and no more names are available?
Or is the list still being compiled?

Tony Sunday, 4 March 2007 15:14
Mr H. is still compiling lists - he drops off a new list every few days, but will ask how much more there is.

UPDATE 8/3/07: The list is now complete. There are no more available strips other than the ones listed on that page.

regarding the last statement , was my name on the 1986 list?(entrance to Mary Hare)

Tony Thursday, 1 March 2007 14:37
No. This list we're talking about is for those who took their exams at school leaving age i.e. 16 years old. So, unfortunately, it doesn't count people who went to Mary Hare.

I was wondering since i left school and would my name be on the wall.

Tony Thursday, 1 March 2007 14:36
I doubt it, but will see what other years Mr Henderson has got. It really depends on whether this was being done when you left school, and if so, whether Mr H. has that year.

Oh sorry to see my name isn't on the list...I know we are getting older now but surely mine is not so old it's rotted away! No hope for pre 79 then tony?

Tony Thursday, 22 February 2007 09:39
There are still some years to come through, but it does look as if earlier years may have been missed either because they weren't available at the time or they weren't in good condition.

Hi Tony
I certainly would be interested in seeing if Mr Henderson has mine..it would be a unique soveneer(sp) of my time at Birkdale..and it would be no problem nipping to southport to pick it up..as I often pop in for the shopping on Lord st. ( or rather I get told I have to take my lady wife shopping! roll eyes (sarcastic) )

Tony Monday, 19 February 2007 12:53
That's two of you interested so far! I'll check the list of names when I get it, and we'll sort something out if you're on it.

Hello there! You asked about the boards near the fish tank. I can answer your question !!! big grin For many years when i was at Birkdale i looked forward to seeing my name go up on the boards when it was my turn to leave. That was in 1986. So imagine when a few years later i went back to Birkdale and discovered they were no longer there.
Apparently the decision had been made to take them all down due to "lack of space" which i personally thought was a disgrace and an insult to the history of the school. The Schiewater Room for example would have been a perfect place to hang them and carry on the tradition.
It was Mr Henderson who wrote them all out though, and it is my understanding that he has kept them all. You might want to get in touch with him and see if he still has yours !!! lol

Tony Sunday, 18 February 2007 21:27
Mr Henderson has confirmed it was actually Mrs Cliffe who wrote out the leaver's lists for the boards on the wall.

Hi tony hope you are well?
Just a thought...when I was at birkdale (left 74)there was a place in the corridor with all the names of past pupils up on the wall near the fish tank...what happened to these when I left and what was the plaque made of (wood?)
Did this naming of past pupils continue after 1974?...if so where? the corridor was filling up a bit even then!
Best wishes to all birkdalians for 2007!

Tony Sunday, 18 February 2007 18:00
The tradition of putting the leaver's results up on the wall continued past 1974 until the 80s. When Mr Henderson retired in 1987, this tradition didn't carry on. Lists were written out for a few more years after though before eventually stopping, but they were stored elsewhere.

And yes, the board frames were made of wood.

If the tradition had continued, it's likely the displays would have had to be moved anyway as the space by the fish tank area was filling up. As Charlotte says, the Schierwater Room might have been a good alternative except that in later years it became the Dance Drama Studio then it changed into the girls' lounge.

Before the school closed Mr Henderson did collect some of these that were in good condition, and cut them up into strips. He gave many out at the 2004 Reunion, and to ex-pupils he has seen since. Mr Henderson is going to provide me with a list of the ones he still has so if you or anyone else is interested, please let me know as I'll be able to check what's available.
